Mazuma Mobile Trade-In_ Turn Phones Into Cash

The drawer test

Open the drawer where you keep cables, old phones and things you swear you might need one day. There is a good chance you will find at least one device that has not been switched on in months: an old iPhone, a previous Samsung, a tablet, a smartwatch, perhaps even a games console.

Technology has a strange habit of becoming invisible the moment we upgrade. The new phone takes over, the old one gets pushed aside, and eventually it becomes part of the furniture. But an unused device can still have resale or recycling value — and keeping it in a drawer does nothing for you.

Mazuma Mobile’s current service goes beyond phones: its sell categories include mobiles, tablets, smartwatches, MacBooks and games consoles. The company says it has bought and sold more than 5 million devices and aims to reuse more than 95% of mobile phones received.

Don’t ask ‘Is it old?’ Ask ‘Is it useful to someone else?’

Why waiting can cost you

The value of technology is not permanent. New models arrive, older generations move down the market, and the condition of a device can deteriorate while it sits unused. A phone with a small scratch today can become a phone with a damaged battery or screen later.

That does not mean you should sell a device the moment a new model launches. It means there is a useful middle ground: once you know you have no realistic use for the old device, check its value rather than automatically storing it.

The five-minute value check

Mazuma’s current selling process is built around a simple sequence: find your model, choose the condition, receive a quote, register the sale, send the device and receive payment. Its site says finding a device and getting a quote can take less than five minutes.

1. Identify it Find the exact model rather than guessing from appearance. Mazuma also provides an IMEI-based model search.

2. Be honest about condition Choose the condition that actually matches the device. The quoted value depends on the model and condition.

3. Compare the quote with the effort You now have a concrete number instead of an assumption about what the device is worth.

4. Decide If you are ready to sell, complete the order and follow the postage instructions.

The cracked-screen myth

A damaged phone is not automatically worthless. Mazuma currently accepts phones in faulty condition and says it can buy devices with dents, scratches, cracked screens and water damage. The condition affects the amount offered, but damage does not necessarily mean the device belongs in the bin.

The practical lesson is simple: quote first, recycle second. You may be surprised by what still has value.

Locked isn’t always the same as blocked

Mazuma’s 2026 guidance makes an important distinction: a phone locked to a network can usually still be sold, while a blocked device — for example, one registered as lost or stolen — generally cannot. That distinction matters if you are trying to sell an older handset whose original network status you have forgotten.

Before sending any device, check its status and follow Mazuma’s current requirements. Do not assume that every lock or restriction has the same meaning.

Your data matters more than your resale value

The most important preparation step is not polishing the phone. It is protecting your information. Before selling, back up anything you need, sign out of relevant accounts, remove personal data and disable device-security features that prevent legitimate resale.

Mazuma also provides a free data-delete tool and says its process is designed to handle devices securely; its guidance notes that some broken devices can still be traded in when the owner cannot wipe the device normally.

What happens after the box leaves your house?

Mazuma says received phones are tested and screened for reuse; reusable devices can be cleaned, repaired or reconditioned and passed to reuse partners, while devices beyond repair are dismantled for recyclable parts.

Its stated goal is to reuse more than 95% of mobile phones received, while non-reusable devices are recycled through its WEEE-authorised treatment operation.

The real circular-tech habit

Buying a new phone does not have to mean the previous phone becomes useless. The more useful mindset is: upgrade, transfer, clean up, sell or recycle. The device can leave your home while continuing its useful life somewhere else.

That is especially relevant when you have multiple old devices. One phone may be worth selling immediately; another may be better kept as a backup; a genuinely unusable device should be handled through responsible recycling rather than left in a drawer indefinitely.

Three things not to do

Don’t guess the value. Use a current quote instead of relying on what you paid for the device years ago.

Don’t hide damage. Describe the condition accurately so the quote and final assessment are based on the same information.

Don’t forget your accounts. A successful sale starts with secure data removal, account sign-out and the required device locks being disabled.

The best upgrade might start with the drawer

A new device is only half of an upgrade. The other half is deciding what happens to the old one. Selling unused tech can turn forgotten hardware into money; responsible reuse and recycling can keep devices and materials in circulation for longer.

So before your next tech purchase, open that drawer. You may already have part of the budget sitting there.
